The events diary below is the original programme’s own calendar: championships, mass-participation days and one-off exhibition fixtures, kept in the order and the wording in which the city announced them.

Nothing has been rewritten to look current, because the value of a diary like this is that it shows what a sporting city actually schedules when it is bidding for attention — world cup rounds and national titles sitting next to a gymfest and a free screening in a city-centre square.
