National Track Cycling Championships
The national track championships are the domestic round that fills the velodrome without an international field, and the entry is as short as the event is routine — several days of racing, national titles at the end.
Routine is the interesting part. A city that can host a national championship as a matter of course is a city with a track that is busy the rest of the year too, which is the case the velodrome record makes for itself.

A domestic championship is also where the next international squad becomes visible, a year or two before it is selected, in front of a crowd small enough to walk around in. Archive listings almost never record that: they record the title, the date and the venue, because those are the fields the form asked for. What the meeting is actually worth to the people who run the track — days of booking, squad time on the boards, a reason to keep the roof lit and the staff employed outside the international weeks — never reaches the listing at all. That side of a venue’s year is the subject of Sport business.
