The three levers that move spreads
Lever 1: Structure vs coverage
Spreads shift when an offense’s core plan matches well vs a defense’s core shell. Think condensed splits plus fast motion vs tight man‑match. Lever 2: Pressure vs protection rules
Books move lines when pressure is likely to hit the QB. It is not just “blitz rate.” It is the front and the rules. Is the defense mugging both A‑gaps? Will the offense slide the line? How to read it: start at scheme conflict, then check the trench, then pace, then weather, then injuries, then your number. If one cell changes (say, a tackle is out), update your fair and your color flag at once.
Case study: when a scheme tell breaks the market
Here is a pattern you will see: a speed offense that lives on motion and crossers vs a defense that plays man‑match with thin CB depth. The market prices the QB and the brand. Common traps and false edges
Do not trust tiny blitz samples. One game vs a backup QB can bend a rate. Do not buy “motion for motion’s sake.” Some teams move but do not gain leverage. Beware garbage time EPA. Fair lines blend team EPA, drive success, red zone finish, pressure vs protection, pace, and health. We weight the last four weeks more than the full year. We mark cluster injuries as a step‑change. - If the defense spins late to single‑high on 3rd and you have a WR who wins inside, look for quick slants and benders. That can keep drives alive and tilt spread cover chance.
